Earth after Birth

earth and birth

Spring's a wondrous thing;
It starts with a whisper
And goes on to sing.
It's cold as death
And lying there
With snow and dry grass
In its hair.

And then it weeps
With flowing tears
And crying wind and thunder nears.
This is the birth of all of life
For spring itself
Is earth's midwife.

And then from earth
A child is born --
Each tree and flower
Greets the dawn,
And new life cries
In its new way
And turns into a summer day.
